Sometimes an unexpected departure from our comfort zone can take us in a whole new direction. The addition of this Mythiques Phoenix Hermes scarf is a happy departure from what I normally gravitate to in scarves.
This scarf is an amazing rendering of the phoenix rising by Laurence Bourthoumieux. It was released in SS2014 and has quickly become a grail scarf for many Hermes scarves collectors (of which I am one)!
This is a scarf which has become a well worn part of my collection and yet is something I would not have purchased at all. Luckily I had a wonderful sales associate at the Hermes store here in Chicago who encouraged me to try it on. At first glance it was not my style. I usually opt for brightly colored scarves and this appeared (while lying in the case) that it was black and white. It didn’t have the bold color punch I usually opt for. The moment she took it out and I tied it around my neck I was in love. It is a elegant combination of black, grey, taupe, a deep teal and aubergine. Gorgeous. What appeared in the case to be a fairly simple design turned out to be quite layered and complex in design.

Mythiques Phoenix
As is clear in the photo the subtile detail on this scarf is extraordinary. There are layers of soft colors which give it such depth. This phoenix has such personality. This would be a wonderful scarf to have framed however I would miss wearing it!
Mythiques Phoenix ties a bit differently depending upon which way it is folded. Darker colors predominate one way, softer feathery taupes and grey tones the other. The darker diagonal ties in a way which is a bit more graphic. The lighter grey side is not only lighter in color but also has a feathery pattern which ties a bit softer and more romantically.

There is a wonderful blog post on this scarf on MaiTai’s Picture Book (a must follow blog for all those that love Hermes scarves). Additionally she did a terrific YouTube video on the subject. Enjoy!
